About Virginia Military Institute

Virginia Military Institute, also referred to as simply VMI, is a senior military college located in Lexington, VA, which is an independent city situated in the confines of Rockbridge County, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 6900 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Lexington is the county seat of Rockbridge County, and it is best known for the fact that it is home of the Washington and Lee University (W&L) and Virginia Military Institute (VMI).

VMI was founded in November, 1839, on the site of the Lexington state arsenal, and it currently offers academic programs in 4 areas of study: liberal arts, engineering, sciences and humanities, overall, the institution offering 14 major and 22 minor areas of study. VMI was ranked 3rd in 2009, being placed after the United States Naval Academy and the United States Military Academy, US News and World Report placing it among top public liberal arts colleges in the United States, the institution also being highly ranked for many of the other educational programs offered, by several other significant publications, including by Forbes, which placed VMI in the top 10 Public Universities in the Nation.

Athletics

Virginia Military Institute's athletic teams are known as the VMI Keydets, a Southern style slang for the word ''cadets'', who compete in 14 sports, on the NCAA Division I level (FCS, formerly I-AA, for football), including in basketball, baseball, football, lacrosse, wrestling and swimming & diving. The most famous athletic story in VMI's history is, perhaps, the two-year run of the 1976 and 1977 basketball teams - in 1976, the team advancing within one game of the Final Four, before bowing to undefeated Rutgers in the East Regional Final, and in 1977, VMI finishing with 26 wins and just four losses (which still remains a school record), reaching the ''Sweet 16'' round of the NCAA tournament.
